BANGALORE: Hundreds of leaders and youth workers of the Janata Dal (S) were disappointed on Friday as their leader and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy did not turn up for a programme organised to felicitate him at the party headquarters here.

The Bangalore City Yuva Janata Dal (S) had made arrangements to felicitate Mr. Kumaraswamy. Around 2,000 workers were waiting to congratulate him.

Though the programme was scheduled at 6.30 p.m., many workers, who brought bouquets, were waiting since 5 p.m. to greet their leader.

To their dismay, it was announced at 7.30 p.m. that Mr. Kumaraswamy would not attend the function on "technical grounds." The programme was cancelled and an appeal was made to workers to meet the Chief Minister at the Kumara Krupa guesthouse.

Some workers termed the event as another "political drama" by Mr. Kumaraswamy. What was the necessity of organising the felicitation programme when the founder of the party himself (H.D. Deve Gowda) did not attend the swearing-in ceremony, they asked.

According to an invitation given to the press, Janata Dal (S) State unit President N. Thippanna was to be the chief guest for the function.

Bangalore city Janata Dal (S) President Srikantamurthy, MLA G. Chandranna and Bangalore city Janata Dal (S) Secretary-General T. Veeresh Kumar were the special invitees.

State Yuva Janata Dal (S) President Gururaja Hunasimara was to preside over the function. Mr. Thippanna and many other leaders also did not turn up.
