Sheila should step down, says BJP

Staff Reporter

For rejection of two Bills by select panel

NEW DELHI: Stating that the Delhi Government had been thrown into a Constitutional crisis, Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly Jagdish Mukhi on Friday said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit should step down immediately following rejection of two successive Bills by the Select Committees of the Assembly.

Mr. Mukhi said when a Government sponsored Bill falls in the Assembly it is taken as the defeat of the ruling establishment. In this case, two Select Committees of the Assembly having Ms. Dikshit and Finance Minister A.K. Walia as members have rejected two Bills successively. "In view of the rejection of these two Bills, a question mark has been raised over the functioning of the Government and its authority to carry out normal business. This virtually amounts to a vote of no confidence against the Government and in the interest of upholding high standards of morality in public life, Ms. Dikshit should resign," he added.

Mr. Mukhi said it was unfortunate that despite having ruling party members in majority in both the Select Committees', the ruling party had to face defeat. He said even Dr. Walia had voted against the adoption of the Bill indicating that he had also lost faith in the Chief Minister.
