Manipur Muslim students go on strike

A Correspondent

IMPHAL: Normal life was disrupted in many parts of Manipur as a result of the 36-hour general strike called by the All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation (AMMSO). The strike which began at 4 a.m. on Saturday is in protest against the refusal of the Manipur government to reserve 10 per cent of the seats in the civil services for Muslim candidates. The strike was complete in Muslim areas. Buses and trucks did not ply as a precautionary measure in the Muslim dominated areas. However all interstate buses and trucks left Imphal as usual since the national highways do not pass through the Muslim areas.

Anwar Hussain, general secretary of the AMMSO told The Hindu that the Manipur government had turned a deaf ear to the appeal by the minorities for reservation in the civil services. The Muslim candidates are also boycotting the civil service examination to be held on Sunday. Over 12,000 candidates will be vying for about 100 Manipur Civil Service and Manipur Police Service posts.
