PONDICHERRY: The Vice-Chancellor of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Karnataka, P.S. Prabhakaran, on Saturday urged people in the medical profession not to get frustrated at the long gestation period to make it big in the profession.

Addressing graduating doctors at the Graduation ceremony of the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) here, Dr. Prabhakaran said, "dedication, hard work and sincerity will get all that you want".

"Privatisation has brought in a lot of money but that has also created a flutter in medical profession. The problem is doctors are not happy with the earnings that they get. Software professionals make quick money but we see so many people nowadays who become nervous wrecks due to their work. Fortunately for us, we don't burn up so easily", he said.

He said that the profession today was at crossroads since it was no longer treated as the noblest profession. "Due to liberalisation the health care delivery system in our country has changed. People can afford to pay and doctors are answerable. So doctors have to take more care and be more responsible to the patient and the system".

Dr Prabhakaran, who presented scrolls to MBBS graduates and to BSc MLT students, said the medical profession lacked human touch. Dr K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER, said the institute had received clearance for various projects including the setting up of a nursing college and construction of buildings for trauma care centre and cancer centre.

A.K. Das Medical Superintendent, K. S. Reddy Dean and Renuka Srinivasan, staff advisor to students were also present on the occasion, when nearly 60 MBBS students received degrees.
