Teachers' federation plans protest

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Democratic Teachers' Federation will stage dharna at district Collectorates on February 9, demanding solution to the problems faced by teachers working in Government institutions.

Its leaders, in a statement issued here on Saturday urged the administration to focus attention on the demands that included scrapping apprentice system, extending old pension rules. - Special Correspondent

B.Ed admissions: `give merit its due'

HYDERABAD: While welcoming the scrapping of minority status for B.Ed colleges on the ground that they harmed the interests of students, the Andhra Pradesh Professional Students' Convening Committee has demanded guidelines on proper functioning of the institutions.

K. Bhaskar, convener, in a statement issued here on Saturday, suggested that steps be taken to enable students to secure and submit applications at a common point. He urged the Government to ensure admissions based on merit. - Special Correspondent

Farmer dies after consuming pesticide

KURNOOL: In a suicide pact, a farmer and his son consumed pesticide at Peddahulti in Pathikonda mandal of Kurnool district on Friday. Peddaiah, 60, who was former sarpanch of the village, died while his son Jayakrishna was battling for life at the general hospital here when reports last came in. Huge losses in agriculture and mounting debts were said to be the reason for their extreme step. TDP leader S.V. Mohan Reddy visited the son who is recovering in the hospital. - Staff Reporter

Suspected Maoists gun down tribal

NALGONDA: Suspected Maoists gunned down a tribal Kethawath Gopa at Usmankunta in naxal-affected Chandampet mandal in Nalgonda district in the early hours of Saturday.

According to Devarakonda DSP Srinivas, two persons knocked took Gopa to a secluded place late on Friday night "to discuss some important things," and shot him dead on the outskirts of the thanda. - Staff Reporter

Minor `raped'

NIZAMABAD: A minor girl was molested allegedly by Suresh, 25, at her residence at Jakranpally mandal headquarters on Friday night.

According to Armoor Circle Inspector S. Mohan Reddy, the accused and the victim's father are friends. After having a drink, they returned home in the night. Later, the girl's father went out on some work. Taking advantage, Suresh allegedly molested the girl in a drunken state. The accused was immediately arrested and sent for medical examination. - Staff Reporter

Enquiry into teachers' appeals hailed

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh United Teachers' Federation has hailed the enquiry launched by the Director of School Education into about 200 appeals filed by teachers against transfers and promotions.

N. Narayana, general secretary, said in a statement that the enquiry into appeals pertaining to Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy and Medak districts was completed on Saturday. He announced the schedule for other districts. - Special Correspondent

TDP men told to fight graft

HYDERABAD: Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu has asked members of the party's legal cell to fight corruption and prevent injustice to people.

Speaking after administering oath to the cell office-bearers here on Saturday, he alleged that the Government was resorting to "corruption" and neglecting interests of the common man.

K. Ravindra Kumar, chairman of the cell, spoke.

The office-bearers suggested an insurance scheme for the party cadre who faced threat from their rivals in villages. - Special Correspondent

Farmer electrocuted

ANANTAPUR: One Laxminarayana Reddy (30), a farmer of Uppalapadu village in Mudigubba mandal, was electrocuted accidentally in his farm fields on Saturday. According to the police he was electrocuted when he was changing the fuse wire for the motor pumpset.

MP warns against use of machinery

KADAPA: Kadapa MP Y.S. Vivekananda Reddy on Saturday warned of stern action if irregularities surfaced and machinery was used for works under Andhra Pradesh Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme. Addressing a meeting on the scheme in the ZP High School at Vempalle, the MP urged officials to take due care to check misuse and use of machinery in works. -Staff Reporter

Loans extended to farmers

CHITTOOR: District Cooperative Central Bank president Rajasekhar Reddy told that the bank had distributed Rs.4.35 crores to farmers as long term loan against the target of Rs.30 crores so far during this year. Talking to media persons here on Saturday, he said that the officers were asked to take action to distribute crop loans in time. The bank branches in the district would be computerised soon besides extending online system to 14 branches. -Staff Reporter

Girl succumbs to injuries

Nellore: A seven-year old girl who was seriously injured after she was hit by a car, at Kasumuru road centre, Venkatachalasatram area, on Saturday, died at the Government Hospital, Nellore.

According to available information, the incident occurred when she along with his brother was crossing the road.

The police seized the car, whereas the driver was said to be absconding. In another incident at Kota mandal, an eight-year old girijan girl lost her life, reportedly due to snake bite.

Talent test today

Nellore: Mathematics talent test will be held at V.R. High School, Nellore, on Sunday from 2-15 p.m. to 3-55 p.m. The test is open for class X students belonging to various schools of the town and aimed at improving knowledge, besides creating awareness about latest developments in the subject. - Staff Reporter

Woman constable bags five medals

Nellore: R. Amruthavalli, a woman constable of II Town Police Station, Nellore, bagged five medals at the State level veteran Amateur Athletic Championship - 2006 -- held at Guntur from January 27 to January 29. The events included 5 km. run, 5 km. walk and 4 x 100 m. run. Superintendent of Police B. Shivdhar Reddy and other officials complimented Amruthavalli for her achievement. - Staff Reporter

Silk shops closed

ANANTAPUR: Some 500 silk shops in Dharmavaram were forcibly closed by the silk weavers on Saturday, demanding remunerative wages to their labour. Workers of the silk weaving units led by P. Ramanjaneyulu, G. Ravi and others alleged that the shop and weaving unit owners were making huge profits by paying peanuts to the workers.

They also demanded reduction in the prices of silk yarn and dyes. The protest is likely to continue for another two days. - Staff Reporter

Closure of railway gate

Kakinada: The railway gate at the level crossing No: 10 between town railway station and port station would be closed for carrying out emergency repairs from February 6 to February 10, according to Railways Senior Section Engineer, Samalkot. The road traffic would be diverted through the RTC gate to prevent inconvenience to the public during these five days, the Engineer said. - Correspondent

Water cooler inaugurated

Kakinada: VVS Siva Prasad, Assistant General Manager of Union Bank of India, Visakhapatnam region, inaugurated the water cooler costing Rs. 25,000 donated by the bank's Prattipadu branch at the Community Health Centre at Prattipadu, on Saturday. Later, the Assistant General Manager told newsmen that the bank turnover had crossed Rs. 1,000 crores. . - Correspondent

Rajahmundry: Minister for Roads and Buildings J. Ramamohana Rao on Saturday reviewed the traffic situation in all towns of East Godavari district along with the Police, Transport, Revenue and Municipal Commissioners. - Staff Reporter

Rythu sadassus

ELURU: The authorities of the Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (EPDCL) are preparing the ground for organising `Rytu sadassus' in all the four revenue divisions in West Godavari district scheduled to commence from Monday in a bid to change the farmers' mindset in favour of installing capacitors for their pumpsets as part of demand-side management.

EPDCL Superintending Engineer Y.P.M.M. Prasad said farmers would be educated on installation of capacitors and their uses in terms of power consumption. He said farmers who could have the capacitors and the ISI mark pump sets by March 31 would only be eligible for getting free power. - Staff Reporter

CHIRALA: P. C. Saibabu, secretary, Lok Satta, Bapatla branch, has said that training classes entitled `Praja Rajyam' will be organised during February for candidates aspiring to contest the panchayat elections, this year.
