Toilet converted into classroom

NEW DELHI: Shortage of classrooms or teachers may not be new to schools run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), but an MCD school at Bawana here seems to have turned to desperate measures by converting one of its toilets into a classroom.

In a letter to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and MCD Commissioner A.K.Nigam, the Right to Education Task Force, an independent organisation, has reported this bizarre finding. The task force had visited the double shift MCD primary school at the jhuggi-jhompri colony in Bawana to check the facilities available.

The two-member team has in its report stated that the school works in two shifts with 355 girls coming in the morning and 420 boys in the afternoon. The team has pointed out serious violations of fundamental and human rights to education in the school.

Headmaster's room

While pointing out that there were three toilets in the school -- one locked and second bolted from outside -- the team has revealed that the third toilet was being used as a classroom. ``There were five rooms, four were used as classrooms and the fifth one was used as the headmaster's room. There were eight sections of the students. Some classes were also held in open,'' the team reported.

According to the report, the school had only two teachers for 420 students.
