Gnanananda awards presented

CHENNAI: The seventh Sadguru Gnanananda awards were presented at a function here on Saturday.

The awardees included Indian Police Service officer Kiran Bedi and former Air Vice-Marshal V. Krishnaswamy and his wife, Jaya Krishnaswamy. The award carries a citation, a draft for Rs. 50,000, a plaque and a shawl.

The organisers said a special category of awards for "families in social work" was introduced this year. Under this, a husband and wife team doing pioneering work would be honoured. So far, the organisation honoured 70 women from various parts of the country.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Kiran Bedi said each person could contribute for the welfare of society. "We have more than we need, and the giving begins when one has the heart to do so."

Awards were also presented to Uma Preman, who runs a medical information centre in Kerala. A renal clinic started byher provides dialysis at a subsidised rate to the underprivileged. In two years, the clinic had catered for more than 6,000 patients. She also published a regional and international medical directory, containing a comprehensive list of hospitals and the services offered by them.

The other recipient was Jameela Nishat, who has established a resource and welfare centre for women in Hyderabad. The organisation takes up issues such as communal harmony, gender equality, education, health and legal advocacy.

The former Chief Election Commissioner, T.S. Krishnamurthy, presented the awards.

Swami Nityanandagiri of Tapovanam, Tirukoilur, and N. Sankar, chairman, Sanmar group of companies, were present.
