BANGALORE: Posing as gold ornament polishers, conmen struck at three places in the city since Friday and made away with jewellery worth Rs. 2.15 lakhs by cheating five women. The police said that around 1 p.m. on Saturday two men came to Tukaram's residence on 2nd Cross, Broadway Road, in Shivajinagar police station limits when his wife Bharathi was alone in the house. After they introduced themselves as ornament polishers, Bharathi first gave her silver anklets for polishing. Later, she asked them to polish her two gold chains and two bangles, together worth Rs. 60,000. The two men made her bring water in a pressure cooker, put some chemicals into it and pretended to put the ornaments into the vessel. They asked Bharathi to boil the water for 30 minutes. When Bharathi boiled the water for 30 minutes and opened the cooker lid, she found the ornaments missing, the police said. On Friday, two men claiming to be gold ornament polishers cheated Niranjani, a resident of J.C. Nagar in Mahalakshmi Layout police station limits, of gold jewellery worth Rs. 30,000. In another incident, three daughters of an ex-serviceman, Devappa, fell prey to gold jewellery polishers at their house in Subramanyanagar police station limits on Friday. The police said the cheats made away with gold ornaments worth Rs. 1.25 lakhs by cheating the three sisters.
