Rajahmundry: The Telugu Desam Party has demanded transparency in the execution of the Polavaram project and condemned the criticism of Minister for Roads and Buildings Jakkampudi Ramamohana Rao on the party's stand on the major irrigation project. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, TDP district spokesman Ganni Krishna and city president Adireddy Appa Rao said that the TDP wanted the project, but was against what they called minting money by the Congress and its contractors in the name of the project. They asked the Government to clarify about the source of funds for construction of the project, tender processing, clearances and execution of works.
300 villages face threat
Mr. Krishna asked the Government to spell out the rehabilitation package and resettlement of evacuees. He wondered why the Government had not taken any decision on the compensation issue when the project would affect more than 300 villages in four districts and reiterated the party's commitment to irrigation projects. Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) rebutted the warning of Mr. Rammohana Rao In a statement, party district secretary D. Subba Rao said that his party was not creating any hurdles to the Polavaram project but was demanding relief package for evacuees. Recalling that his party has suggested several alternatives to reduce the number of submerging villages, he asked the Minister whether the Government wanted to make the life of lakhs of tribals miserable.
