Manipal: Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) will celebrate its golden jubilee in 2007. For this, the institute has planned a series of programmes throughout the year. Meetings are being held in important cities to brief the alumni about the programmes and to seek their support. The first meeting was held in Bangalore in December 2005 where 260 alumni attended. The next meeting will be held in Mangalore on February 12. An alumni meeting was held in North America. The tentative schedule of events for the celebrations includes inaugural programme on January 6, 2007, Silver Union on January 7, Alumni Reunion on January 8, "Revels" in March, "Techtatva" in September, a national convention on December 17, and valedictory on December 22. The institute was started in 1957 by T.M.A. Pai. It was then called the Manipal Engineering College. It was among the first self-financed colleges of the country. The first academic programme that was offered in the college was Civil Engineering. It was renamed as Manipal Institute of Technology in 1974. Recently, "The Telegraph" in a survey of recruiters throughout the country rated MIT as the 13th best engineering school. Recently, MIT has been identified by EMC, U.S., to offer specialised elective course in storage devices for final year students in Electrical Engineering discipline. It is the only institute to offer this programme. The concept of practice school, which was introduced in 2005, proved to be a useful programme. In 2000, MIT became a constituent institution of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) a deemed university. Students of MIT have an opportunity to do their project work abroad. One such arrangement is with Hochshule Bremen, Germany. A MIT Innovation Centre and Lecture Hall Complex with state-of-the-art facilities have been built as part of the golden jubilee celebrations. The two facilities will be ready in four months. The Innovation Centre will facilitate inter-disciplinary research. A Student Activity Centre will be set up.
