Quake-resistant buildings mooted

Special Correspondent

People should be prepared to face any exigency, says Lakhera

Pondicherry: Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, M.M. Lakhera, has called for quake-resistant buildings as the Union Territory had been in the seismic zone.

Inaugurating an eight-day training programme conducted by the Pondicherry Multipurpose Social Service Society (PMSSS) and the Mumbai-based SARITSA Foundation here on "disaster preparedness" on Monday, Mr. Lakhera said it was necessary that those preparing layouts for housing colonies should keep certain space vacant so that in times of earthquake people could rush their for safety.

Expressing concern over absence of coordination among various departments and also those coming forward to contribute their labour after the tsunami that struck the Territory in December 2004, Mr. Lakhera said with disasters becoming frequent phenomena, it was absolutely necessary that people should get themselves prepared to face any exigency.

The Local Administration Minister, A. Elumalai, referred to the work the non-governmental organisations like PMSSS were doing for rehabilitation of the tsunami-hit in Pondicherry. The Government had established a Disaster Management Authority.

The PMSSS executive director, Rev Fr.R. Ratchagar, and the chairman, SARITSA Foundation, Col.N.M. Verma, were among those who spoke.
