New Delhi: Super-heavy pugilist V. Johnson scored a morale-boosting win over Athens Olympics bronze medallist Ahmad Wattar of Syria in the semifinals before finishing with a silver medal in a Hungarian international boxing tournament held at Debrecen. In the plus 91-kg category, Johnson beat Wattar 17-14 to avenge his 2002 loss to the Syrian at the Busan Asian Games. In the final, Johnson gave a tough challenge to Germany's Kober Stefan before going down 13-18. Johnson opened with a 23-8 verdict against Fazekhs Otto of Hungary and got past Steven Rudic of Australia 23-13 in the quarterfinals.
Bronze winners
Paramjeet Singh and Vijender bagged bronze medals as the 11-member Indian contingent returned here on Monday afternoon. In the 48-kg class, Paramjeet had an impressive run till the semifinals, defeating Farhat Felivan of Turkey 12-9 and Romesh Fernando of Australia 20-15. In the semifinals, Hungary's Bedak Pal outclassed the Indian 31-7. In the 69-kg division, Vijender scored an emphatic win against Borna Katalinic of Croatia. However, in the semifinals, he lost to David Kubicek of Hungary 9-24 and had to settle for bronze.
