M.Sc. Photonics course to be revived

R. Krishnamoorthy

Bharathidasan University will explore possibility of appointing full-time faculty

TIRUCHI : Bharathidasan University has started an encouraging collaborative venture, deciding to adopt M.Sc. Photonics programme offered by Periyar E.V.R. Government Arts and Science College since 2004-2005.

The programme, a `frontier' discipline, for which the admissions were suspended the very next year, 2005-2006, owing to lack of infrastructure and shortage of teachers, will be revived from the ensuing academic year.

The college's Postgraduate Research Department of Physics was instrumental in getting the Rs.35-lakh UGC innovative programme started. It is highly job-oriented.

However, only eight students were admitted in the first year against a sanctioned strength of 25. Concerted efforts of the university and the Tiruchi Member of Parliament, L. Ganesan, for sanctioning of teaching posts for the discipline have not fetched results as yet.

Also, the Directorate of Collegiate Education is yet to approve the college's plan for purchase of equipment worth Rs. 20 lakh. The rest of the amount is meant for purchase of books and contingency of Rs. 1.1 lakh for five years.

The department, which is left with a provision of only Rs. 2,000 a month for outsourcing faculty, is finding it tough to do justice to quality, despite sharing the workload itself.

It is against this backdrop that the university has decided to depute lecturers to the college to handle the theory classes and permit the students to utilise the facilities available at its main and Khajamalai campuses for practicals.

The university will also explore the possibility of appointing full-time faculty for the discipline, according to the Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangamuthu.
