Government to focus on Bangalore's infrastructure

BANGALORE: The State Government on Monday asked officials of civic agencies to complete roadwork in Bangalore City within three months.

Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and Bangalore Mayor Mumtaz Begum held a high-level meeting with officials of Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and asked them to come up with an action plan and implement the work keeping in mind the infrastructure needs of Bangalore for 25 years.

He said funds will not be a constraint for execution of infrastructure projects. The Government is keen on clearing infrastructure bottlenecks of the city, he said. The Government has asked BMP and BDA to complete ongoing roadwork, including flyovers, in four months. The Chief Minister asked the officials to repair roads damaged in last year's floods within two months.

Traffic problems

To put in place plans to reduce traffic congestion in view of the increased number of vehicles, the traffic police have been instructed to submit a comprehensive report outlining the steps needed to tackle traffic problems in 15 days. Nearly 900 new vehicles are registered in the city every day.

A high-level committee comprising officials from BMP, BDA, BWSSB and Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) will be set up for coordination between civic agencies and the Government in addressing infrastructure inadequacies of the city, he said. The demands of information technology and biotechnology sectors on infrastructure will be taken care of, the Chief Minister said.

About "Greater Bangalore", he said a decision will be taken soon to merge six City Municipal Councils and one Town Municipal Council on the outskirts of the city with the BMP.

The Chief Minister said the BDA has been asked to form a residential layout to provide sites for those who are residing in the city for more than 25 years.

He said steps will be taken for improving living condition of people in slums.

He was referring to reports that the project may be delayed as Union Civil Aviation Ministry had asked the Bangalore International Airport Ltd. to prepare a new blueprint, keeping in mind the increase in passenger traffic. Work on the runway has been started and the existing schedule, the airport is expected to become operational by 2008, he said. To know the grievances of city residents, Mr. Kumarawamy said he, Mr. Yediyurappa and officials of civic bodies will tour the city at night (from 10 p.m. to midnight) once in a month.
