Pran Sabharwal passes away

NEW DELHI: Veteran journalist Pran Sabharwal passed away at Apollo Hospital here on Monday. He was 78.

According to family sources, Mr. Sabharwal had been ailing for some time and the end came on Monday evening.

A student leader and a freedom fighter who also went to jail, Mr. Sabharwal's career in journalism lasted well over five decades. He wrote for several newspapers and publications on a wide range of issues.

He is survived by his wife and three children.

Four held for cheating

NEW DELHI: Four persons have been arrested by the Anti Auto-Theft Squad of the East Delhi police on charges of preparing and selling fake election identity cards, driving licenses and registration certificates of vehicles.

Two of the accused, Sajid and Haroon, were arrested from near Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) at Anand Vihar. The police recovered forged stamps of a metropolitan magistrate, a fake election identity card and forged certificates from them. At their instance, the police arrested their two accomplices, Vikas and Mehraj, and recovered 20 fake and forged affidavits, nine election identity cards and five vehicle registration certificates.

U.P.-based `criminals' arrested

NEW DELHI: Five alleged criminals wanted in several cases of robbery in the Capital and Uttar Pradesh were arrested following an encounter with the Crime Branch at Kotwali in North Delhi on Sunday. Four country-made firearms were recovered from their possession.

Acting on a tip-off that some Uttar Pradesh based criminals would assemble near Ekta Shtal Park on Ring Road, the police laid a trap and overpowered three of the suspects, at which their two other accomplices opened fire. However, the police managed to arrest the two.

The accused were identified as Mushtaq, Sanwar, Abdul Sattar, Januwa and Iliyas. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that Mushtaq, Sanwar and Abdul carried rewards of Rs. 2,500 each on their heads, declared by the Uttar Pradesh police. The accused were involved in more than 40 cases of robbery, attempt-to-murder and the Arms Act. In January, they had committed two robberies at Loni in Uttar Pradesh.

Bomb hoax

NEW DELHI: A call claiming that a bomb had been planted at the Connaught Place branch of ABN Amro Bank led the police to search the entire premises on Monday. The call was declared a hoax after no explosives were found.

Around 1-45 p.m., the Police Control Room received an anonymous call claiming that a bomb would explode inside ABN Amro Bank. Subsequently, bomb disposal squads were pressed into action and the premises searched.

Two arrested

NEW DELHI: Two alleged criminals were arrested at Shalimar Bagh in North-West Delhi on Saturday. Two country-made pistols were recovered from their possession.

The accused were identified as Satish and Veer Singh. The police said they were involved in robbery cases. A motorcycle stolen from Sabzi Mandi was recovered at their instance. A hunt has been launched for their accomplice, Saleem.
