dated February 8, 1956: The Amritsar Congress

A crowd of over 50,000 gave a tumultuous reception to the Congress President, Mr. U.N. Dhebar, on his arrival at Shaheednagar on February 7 for the 61st session of the Indian National Congress. Giant crackers boomed welcome as the train bringing Mr. Dhebar steamed into the gaily-decorated Amritsar station. He was received by Giani Gurmukh Singh Musafir, Chairman of the Reception Committee, Mr. Pratap Singh Kairon, Punjab Chief Minister, and others. The Congress President, standing in an open jeep, acknowledged the greetings as renewed full-throated slogans came from the vast concourse.
