Coimbatore: A survey undertaken by National Service Scheme volunteers to identify manuscripts written over 75 years ago, ended recently. A release said that the surveyors looked for manuscripts that had literary, artistic, aesthetic, scientific or religious value.
Students trained
In preparation for the survey, Bharathiar University offered a one-day training last month for 130 National Service Scheme volunteers from colleges in Coimbatore, Erode and the Nilgiris districts.
Coding sheets
The students learnt about manuscripts on birch, palm, leaf, handmade paper and cloth. They received identity cards, coding sheets and information on the location they were to survey. The incentive for each student surveyor was Rs. 200 a day. District Collector S. Kosalaraman inaugurated the training programme and Vice-Chancellor S. Sivasubramanian delivered the presidential address.
