TUTICORIN: The newly established ammonium bicarbonate plant and gasifier system at the Tuticorin Alkali Chemicals and Fertilisers Limited (TAC) was inaugurated by its chairman, A.C. Muthiah, at a function held on the TAC premises recently. Sources said the ammonium bicarbonate plant was designed by the in-house R& D wing and was established at a cost of Rs. 30 lakhs. The plant, the second of its kind in South India, possesses a capacity to produce 10 tonnes per day of ammonium bicarbonate, a product widely used in the biscuit industry. The gasifier system established at a cost of Rs. 40 lakhs would enable the company to dry the wet ammonium chloride crystals produced inside the plant in a cost effective and environment friendly manner, company officials said. "Prior to the establishment of the system, fuel oil was used in the drying process and the rising cost of fuel oil prompted the unit to adopt alternative techniques," officials added. Later at the function, DNV ( Det Norske Veritas), an ISO certification agency, handed over ISO-14001 certificate to TAC for fulfilling the norms for environmental management. S. Chandramohan, Managing Director of TAC, received the certificate from B. Ajith, an official of DNV.
