`Little Europe' comes to DU campus

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi University's Department of Slavonic and Finno-Ugrian Studies is organising a five-day film festival titled ``Little Europe 2006: Literature and Cinema" on its South Campus from February 13.

This fifth edition of the festival is aimed at overcoming the boundaries of cultural, social and historic differences among the participating countries. The festival will be inaugurated by the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to India, Jaromir Novotny. The Academy Award winning Czech film ``Closely Observed Trains" will be screened on the opening day. Set at the time of Nazi occupation during World War II, the film is a tragicomedy about sex and its relationship to political consciousness.

On the same day, the well-known Polish film ``With Fire and Sword" set in 17th Century Poland during the Cossack uprising against the nobility will also be screened.

Hungarian film ``Merry-Go-Round" -- a lyrical, atmospheric re-working of the Romeo and Juliet story in a contemporary social and political milieu -- will be screened on Tuesday, while Slovenian film ``Carmen" directed by Metod Pevec will be screened the next day.
