Census of children in Kodagu

Staff Correspondent

It will help identify child labourers

Why a headcount?
  • To assess their level of education
  • To learn the reasons for dropping out of schools
  • To plan for rehabilitation of needy children

Madikeri: A census of children in Kodagu, in the age group of three to 14, will be undertaken in the district from February 23 to 25, Deputy Commissioner Subodh Yadav, said here on Tuesday.

He was presiding over a meeting under the "Children Census-2006" programme at the Old Assembly Hall, an official release said. Gathering information on children will help assess their level of education and schooling, learn the reasons for dropping out and also re-admit them in schools. It will also enable the administration to identify child labourers, streetchildren and plan for their rescue and rehabilitation, Mr. Yadav said.

    `Get exact details'

Mr. Yadav told the officials involved in the programme to come out with exact details in the census, warning of action against them for lapses. He asked the DDPI to take steps to train the personnel likely to be engaged in census operations and also appoint nodal officers and supervisors. Assistance of the anganwadi workers can be taken, he said.

DDPI Sampath Kumar told Mr. Yadav that all preparations have been made to conduct the census.

Teams comprising three teachers, with one as the supervisor, will be constituted for the work. Chief Executive Officer of the Zilla Panchayat K. Sundar Naik; Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services M.T. Manjunath; District Scouts and Guides Chief Commissoner K.T. Baby Mathew; were present.

Presiding over another meeting concerning rain damage relief works in the district, Mr. Yadav warned the officials of the PWD, Panchayat Raj engineering wing and the Karnataka Land Army Corporation Limited, of stringent action if they do not complete the relief works in the district by February 20.
