Colombo: South Africa kept alive its hopes of a super league quarterfinal berth, hammering the U.S. by 162 runs in a Group B match of the ICC Under-19 World Cup here on Tuesday. The South Africans accumulated 277 for eight and bowled out the tournament newcomer for 115 in just 29.1 overs. South Africa owed its win to a combination of excellent batting by captain Dean Elgar and wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter, and some fine bowling from Richard Das Neves and Craig Alexander. Elgar (79) and Kieswetter (80) added 153 for the sixth wicket to rescue the side from a perilous 101 for five, both players taking the attack to the U.S. bowlers. Alexander (three for 26) wrecked the U.S. top order and was on a hat-trick in the first over of the innings before Das Neves (five for 29) mopped up the lower order. In a Group C encounter, Sri Lanka thrashed Namibia by 137 runs. The host scored 263 for eight and dismissed Namibia for 126. Man of the match Sachithra Serasinghe followed up his 41 with three for 22, while Super Sub Rajeewa Weerasinghe took four for 24. The scores: Group A: New Zealand 259 for six in 50 overs (Todd Astle 67, Noema-Barnett 67, Ronald Karaitiana 43 not out) beat Uganda 137 in 48.4 overs (Dean Bartlett five for 30). Group B: South Africa 277 for eight in 50 overs (C. Kieswetter 80, D. Elgar 79) beat U.S. 115 in 29.l overs (Das Neves five for 29). Group C: Sri Lanka 263 for eight in 50 overs (D. Cooray 64) beat Namibia 126 in 38.3 overs (Rajeewa Weerasinghe four for 24). Group D: Zimbabwe 201 in 49.5 overs (R. Higgins 74, P. Khadra four for 28) beat Nepal 199 for nine in 50 overs (K. Chaugai 78).
