Srikakulam: Commissioner of Horticulture Anil Chandra Punetha has said that Srikakaulam district is one of the 12 districts in the State selected for implementation of National Horticultural Mission. As part of it, Rs.2-crores has been sanctioned for development of horticulture in the district. Mr. Punetha, who is the State level nodal officer for implementation of Indiramma scheme in Srikakulam district, said on Tuesday that depending on the requirement and response from farmers, Rs.5 to Rs.10 crores would be made available for development of horticulture.
Micro irrigation
He suggested farmers to take up cultivation of vegetables and oil palm trees and development of fruit bearing trees and coconut gardens. He said that schemes costing Rs.1,200 crores were taken up through the micro irrigation project in the State. Farmers taking up units under this project would be eligible for Rs.50,000 subsidy, Mr. Punetha said and exhorted farmers to take advantage of the project and go for crops which would ensure better returns. Reviewing Indiramma programme later at the collectorate, Mr. Punetha directed officials to ensure transparency and clarity in the identification of villages and basic requirements of the villages and selection of beneficiaries for the programme. Organisation of gram sabhas for this purpose was essential. Then a comprehensive report should be submitted to the Collector, he said.
