Narasimha Murthy is new Advocate-General

BANGALORE: R.N. Narasimha Murthy will be the new Advocate-General of the State. Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa met on Tuesday and decided to appoint him in place of B.T. Parthasarathy, who has resigned.

This will be the second stint as Advocate-General for Mr. Murthy, a senior advocate, who held the position during the tenure of the late Ramakrishna Hegde as Chief Minister. — Staff Reporter

Varsity to confer three honorary doctorates

MANGALORE: Mangalore University has decided to confer honorary doctorates on eminent folklore scholar Amruth Someshwar, the former Supreme Court judge N. Santosh Hegde and B. Nanjamma of Kodagu. The doctorates will be presented at the 24th annual convocation of the university to be held on Saturday.

Four-month course in textile design

Government thanked for VAT exemption

Bangalore: The Bangalore Wholesale Foodgrains and Pulses Merchants' Association has thanked the State Government for exempting pulses, wheat and rice from VAT for one year. This should continue till Central sales tax is phased out, association President Ramesh Chandra Lahoti has said.

If VAT had been imposed on these essential food items, rice would have become costlier by Rs. 2 a kg, pulses by Rs. 3 to Rs. 4 and wheat by at least Re. 1 a kg, he said. The zero VAT rate should continue for the present, he said. — Special Correspondent

Concert at Shravanabelagola

Bangalore: The TSK School of Classical Music, Bangalore, which promotes young musicians, will organise a concert on Wednesday at Shravanabelagola. The concert will be based on songs about the Thirthankaras of the Jain faith.

The School of Music has been encouraging young people interested in learning music through the guru-sishya tradition and helps young talent get exposure through TV programmes and concerts. — Special Correspondent

BJP leader defends Yediyurappa's remark

Bangalore: The Bharatiya Janata Party leader Abbas Ali Bohra has defended Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa's remark that it is time to strengthen the Hindutva forces in the State now that the party has come to power through a coalition with the Janata Dal (Secular).

Speaking to The Hindu , Mr. Bohra, a former president of the Minority Morcha of the BJP, said it is natural for Mr. Yediyurappa to make such a remark as Hindus were instrumental in the party winning 79 Assembly seats from a mere two during 1985-89. Any politician, he said, would tend to make such a remark in gratitude to those who voted the party to power. — Staff Reporter

`Deputy Chief Minister not anti-Dalit'

Bangalore: The President of the Karnataka State Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Federation, D.S. Veeraiah, has defended Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa against the charge being levelled by some Dalit organisations that he had the portrait of B.R. Ambedkar removed from his chambers in the Vidhana Soudha.

Mr. Veeraiah told presspersons here on Tuesday that, in fact, Mr. Yediyurappa wants the portrait of Ambedkar exhibited in all schools and colleges. Mr. Yediyurappa was instrumental in getting 16 Dalits elected to the Assembly on the BJP ticket, Mr. Veeraiah said. — Staff Reporter

Man falls under chariot, dies

Raichur: Mukappa (45), son of Hanumantha, who was injured when he accidentally slipped and fell under a wheal of a chariot during the Anjaneya festival at B. Ganekal village of Deodurga taluk on Sunday, died at the Rajiv Gandhi Super-speciality hospital here Tuesday. The Jalahalli police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR: Peeryanbee (35), wife of Hussain Sab, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at her house at Gunjalli village near here on Monday. The Turvihal police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Veeresh and Hussainsab on a gambling charge and recovered Rs. 5,000 stake money from them in Sindhanur town on Monday. They have been remanded in judicial custody. The Sindhanur town police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Recovered

RAICHUR: The Raichur police arrested Bheemanna and recovered 30 litres of spurious toddy when he was selling it at Kothadoddi village near here on Monday. He has been remanded in judicial custody. The Idapanur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Bill counters open

HUBLI: The bill collection counters of Hubli Electricity Supply Company at Tabibland office, New English School sub-divisional office, Old Hubli, Vishweshwarnagar, Keshwapur, Akshay Park and Navanagar will remain open on February 9 and February 11, which have been declared holiday on account of Moharam and second Saturday, a release said.

SHIMOGA: The Kote Police station have arrested a gang of three persons allegedly involved in chain snatching cases. The police had formed a special for this purpose. It recovered gold chains estimated at Rs. 1.20 lakhs from the accused. The names of the accused were given as Sayyed Jafafullah of Shimoga, Shashi and Srikant of Bhadravati. — Special Correspondent
