Gulbarga University urged to seek aid under 'Potential for Excellence' programme

  • Centre, States focussing on primary education
  • Government funding for higher education decreasing

Gulbarga: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has initiated many programmes to provide financial assistance to universities, UGC Professor Emeritus N. Rudraiah said here on Tuesday.

Speaking after inaugurating a two-day National Conference on Applied Mathematics at the Gulbarga University Mathematics Department, Prof. Rudraiah observed that the Union and State governments are laying increased stress on primary education.

This is one of the reasons why government funding for higher education is decreasing. The UGC has, therefore, rushed in to bridge this gap, he said.

He advised Gulbarga University and other institutions to approach the UGC for assistance. Assistance is available under programmes such as "Special Assistance Programme" and "Potential Centre of Excellence," which recognises different departments as centres for advanced studies.

The UGC gives funds amounting to Rs. 35 lakhs for promoting research under the Special Assistance Programme.

    Infrastructure

Similarly, nearly Rs. 35 crores will be provided for the development of infrastructure, including equipment, under the Potential for Excellence programme. "Gulbarga University has the potential to grow into a centre of excellence and it should seek assistance under this programme," he said. He commended the university for making strides in the field of biotechnology.

Vice-Chancellor V.B. Coutinho said had tried to provide the best infrastructure to the university during his four-year tenure. He hoped the incoming Vice-Chancellor would apply for the Potential Centre of Excellence programme.

Around 200 delegates from around the country are participating in the conference, while more than 50 young research scholars will present papers.

There will be invited lectures on the topics "Techniques to Solve Problems Arising in Fluid Mechanics" by Prof, Rudraiah, "Dynamical System" by V. Kannan, "Coupled Benard-Marangoni Ferroconvection in a Rotating Ferrofluid Layer" by I.S. Shivakumara, "Hydrodynamics of Bearing Lubrication Involving a Newtonian Liquid" by P.G. Siddeshwar, "Heat Transfer in the Flow of Power Law Fluid Over a Non-isothermal Stretching Sheet" by P.S. Datti and K.V. Prasad, "Interfacial Instability at the Interface Between Fluid Saturated Porous Media" by B.S. Krishnamurthy and N. Rudraiah, "Graph Theory Applications" by H.B. Walikar, "Partial Differential Equations" by D.B. Dhaigude and "Some Convective Flow" by D.V. Krishna.

There will be separate sessions on fluid dynamics, graphs theory, and topology.
