59 and going strong

FIGHTING FIT: S. Anbanandam.

At 59, S. Anbanandam is not only a fit man but also has it in him the ability and will power to set records. A former principal of Periyar EVR College, he took part at the XXIV Tamil Nadu State-level Masters Athletic Meet held at Cheyyar recently in the 55-plus age category and heaved the discus to a record distance of 33.75 metres. His effort broke the 12-year-old record of 30.16m set by Mani Sait at Coimbatore in 1994. That's not all — Anbanandam also holds records in hammer throw (50-plus and 55-plus category) and shot put (55-plus category).

He does not forget to mention the methodical training he received from the Tiruchi district Athletic coach Suganthi Annavi. A recipient of "Jewel of India" and "Eminent Citizen of India" awards from International Institute of Education and Management and "Indira Gandhi Excellence Award" from Indian Solidarity Council for his achievements in education, social service and sports, Mr. Anbanandam is gearing to continue his winning spree at the National Masters Championship to be held at Chandigarh next month.
