Open varsity exams in May

HYDERABAD : The undergraduate courses of B.A., B.Com, B.Sc examinations of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University will be held in May 2006.

The final year degree examinations will be held from May 7 to 12 and second year degree examinations from May 18 to 23, while the first year examinations will be conducted from May 28 to 31.

The last date for submission of examination registration forms at study centres for the examinations is March 20. - Special Correspondent

Red sanders worth Rs. 5 lakhs seized

Nellore : The Venkatagiri police seized two vehicles and recovered red sanders worth Rs.5 lakhs on Tuesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the police detained three persons, suspected to be part of the clandestine operation. In all 25 red sanders were seized in the raid. - Staff Reporter

Shekhawat advised to go for laser treatment

HYDERABAD : Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was advised on Tuesday to undergo laser treatment for remedying a minor post-cataract problem by ophthalmologists at L.V. Prasad Eye Institute here.

Mr. Shekhawat, who flew into the city last night to get examined at the institute, later returned to Delhi. - Special Correspondent

Two houses torched

VIZIANAGARAM : Two huts of dalits were torched and three injured in an attack allegedly by upper castes at Panchali village in Pachipenta mandal on Monday.

The Pachipenta police registered cases against 13 persons and five dalit women. Police pickets were posted in the village.

According to the police, a scuffle at a public tap led to group clash. The situation is under control. -Correspondent

APERC to conduct public hearings

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission will conduct public hearings at different places across the State on February 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 on objections/ suggestions sent in response to its notices issued on January 4.

A press release issued by the commission here on Tuesday announced the schedule of hearings to be held on five days. - Special Correspondent

CPI(M)'s plea on housing scheme

HYDERABAD : The CPI (M) State Committee has urged Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to withdraw the additional cost being collected from beneficiaries under the Rajiv Gruhakalpa Scheme and provide subsidy to them.

CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu, in a letter to Dr. Reddy on Tuesday, said the cost of each house was increased from Rs.75,000 to Rs.82,500 and the beneficiary's share from Rs.7,500 to Rs.8,250 on the pretext of escalating costs. - Special Correspondent

TRS meeting on February 14

HYDERABAD: An extended general body meeting of the TRS will be held here on February 14.

Speaking to reporters, TRS spokesmen -- S. Madhusudhanachary, K. Yadagiri Reddy, Satish Mahajan and M. Sambasivaraju -- said the meeting would herald a drive to enrol the targeted one lakh `sainiks' for the Telangana Jagarana Sena. - Special Correspondent

Bus passengers robbed of cash

ADILABAD : Passengers of the Guntur-Adilabad luxury RTC service were robbed in the wee hours of Tuesday near Indanpalli village. Two persons, wielding an axe and a knife gained entry into the bus by breaking open the driver side window, and decamped with about Rs. 11,000.

According to the police, the miscreants stopped the bus near a temple and broke open the window as conductor refused to open the door. They took way Rs. 5,000 from the conductor's bag. - Staff Reporter

20 hurt as tent collapses

KURNOOL: Twenty persons sustained injuries, six of them seriously when the tent at an Indiramma meeting collapsed due to high velocity wind at Aluru in Kurnool district on Tuesday. According to reports, a function for launching of Indiramma programme was conducted at Junior College grounds in Aluru in which Minister for Lift Irrigation M. Mareppa took part. Soon after the Minister completed the speech, the tent collapsed. The Minister escaped unhurt. - Staff Reporter

Training in meditation

TIRUPATI: The Institute of Sri Ramchandra Consciousness, Hyderabad, will hold a free training programme on Pranahuthi-aided meditation in Tirupati on February 11 and 12. Youth dies in road accident

Nellore: A 25-year-old person was killed after he was hit by a tipper on the national highway near Talvaypadu village of Pellakuru mandal, on Tuesday. The incident occurred when the deceased was grazing goats. The deceased has been identified as B. Polaiah. Meanwhile, the police at Naidupet have arrested a lorry driver for ramming into a stationary lorry on the highway on February 1. - Staff Reporter

Free medical camp held

MADANAPALLE: In connection with the Healing Ministry Week-2006 celebrations a free medical camp was held by Arogyavaram Medical Centre and MLL hospital jointly at MLL hospital Madanapalle on Tuesday. Specialists examined nearly 700 patients including 200 schoolchildren. Free consultation and medicines were given to schoolchildren. - Correspondent

Couple dupes woman

Nellore: A couple allegedly duped a woman and escaped with her gold ornaments at an STD booth. The two reportedly entered the booth at Butchireddipalem on the pretext of making telephone calls. While waiting there they entered into a conversation with the woman. Soon they impressed her, creating a feeling that all of them belonged to the same village. When the booth was free, the couple went inside. While the husband was talking over phone, the wife entered another room and allegedly stole 10 sovereigns of ornaments. The mischief was noticed only on the next day and a complaint was lodged with the police. - Staff Reporter

Police vehicle park inaugurated

Nellore: Superintendent of Police B. Shivdhar Reddy inaugurated the modern police vehicle park at the district police office, Nellore, on Monday evening. Built at a cost of Rs. 11 lakhs it aims at providing sufficient parking facilities for department vehicles coming to the DPO, besides ensuring maintenance. - Staff Reporter

TTD to take over temple

KADAPA: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams will take over Sri Lakshmi Venkateswara Swamy temple at Devunikadapa, in accordance with the orders of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Collector G. Ashok Kumar said on Tuesday. TTD was also asked to develop Annamacharya complex and Tallapaka village into a tourist spot, Mr. Kumar stated. The Chief Minister also directed TTD to develop the pathway from Mamandur to Tirumala. - Staff Reporter

DSO warning to cardholders

Kakinada: The District Supply Officer has warned cardholders against bringing more than one card to fair price shops for drawing ration and if anyone is found with more than one card all the cards will be cancelled.

He said here on Tuesday that only family members whose photos were affixed on the ration card would be allowed to procure the essential commodities. — Correspondent

Literary award for bank employee

Srikakulam: Attada Appala Naidu, a prolific writer, bagged the Madhurantakam Raja Rao Foundation's Katha Kokila Award for 2005.

Mr. Naidu, an employee of Visakha Grameena Bank working in Narasannapeta, has more than 70 short stories, three novels besides plays, to his credit. Kalipatnam Rama Rao known as `Kaa Raa' in literary circles and B.V.A. Rama Rao Naidu of Srikakulam Sahithi congratulated Mr. Appala Naidu for his achievement. The award will be presented in Hyderabad on February 12.— Special Correspondent
