REDUCED TO ASHES: A view of Simhachalam Nagar, Rajahmundry, where fire broke out on Tuesday.
Rajahmundry : In a major fire accident at Simhachalam Nagar of Rajahmundry on Tuesday, 250 houses were destroyed. Over 350 families lost their property worth Rs. 30 lakhs. However, there were no casualties or loss of cattle. Fire tenders from AP Paper Mills, ONGC, Kovvuru, Anaparti and HPCL brought the fire under control.

District Collector Praveen Prakash, who rushed to the spot, assured the victims of taking all the necessary steps for their rehabilitation. He asked in-charge Sub-Collector C. Sudarshan Reddy to provide immediate assistance like alternative accommodation, food and 5 kg of rice to each family. MLA R. Suryaprakash Rao, Mayor M.S. Chakravarti and NGOs' Association district president Jakkampudi Vijayalakshmi said they would first shift victims to corporation schools nearby and provide food and medical assistance to them. TDP leader G. Butchaiah Chowdary and BJP leader Kantipudi Sarvarayudu appealed to the Collector to take speedy measures for rehabilitation of victims. According to the victims, fire broke out when a woman in one of the houses in the colony was cooking with firewood.
