`Thanmatra', `Ananthabhadram' bag five honours each

Thiruvananthapuram: Thanmatra directed by Blessy and Ananthabhadram directed by Santosh Sivan have bagged five honours each in the State film awards for 2005. Blessy is the best director and scriptwriter.

Mohanlal has been adjudged the best actor for his outstanding portrayal of Rameshan Nair in Thanmatra and Navya Nair the best actress for her distinct roles in Saira and Kanne Madanguka. Baby Neeraja has been selected as the best child artiste (Kanne Madanguka). Arjun Lal has got a special mention of the jury for his role in Thanmatra.

Jury chairman Sibi Malayil noted that Thanmatra, portraying the tragedy of a middle class family with the husband becoming a victim of Alzheimer's disease, was "touching." The jury has commended the technical excellence of the film in all areas.

The awards were announced by Cultural Affairs Minister A.P. Anil Kumar here on Tuesday.

Achanurangatha Veedu directed by Lal Jose has been chosen the second best film and Salim Kumar the second best actor for his role in the film. Bhavana has been adjudged the second best actor for her performance in Daivanamathil. The film has brought Aryadan Shoukath the award for the best story.

Ananthabhadram has fetched Santosh Sivan the award for best cinematographer. The awards for the best music direction (M.G. Radhakrishnan), editing (Sreekar Prasad), art direction (Sunil Babu) and make-up (Pattanam Rasheed) have also been bagged by the film. Ponkunnam Damodaran has been selected posthumously for the award for the best lyricist (Nottam). The award for composing the background score has gone to Ramesh Narayan (Saira). M Jayachandran has bagged the award for the best playback singer and K.S. Chithra the best female playback singer for their songs in Nottam.

Achuvinte Amma directed by Sathyan Anthikad has been adjudged the best popular film with aesthetic appeal and Roshan Andrews the best debutant director for the film Udayananu Tharam. The work in Athbhuthadweepu has fetched Ajith George the best sound recordist award, S. B. Satheesh and actor Ajayan the jury's special mention. Dileep (Chanthupottu) has bagged the jury's special award and Kalamandalam Ramankutty Nair directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan the award for the best documentary film.
