New D-G for Sashastra Seema Bal

NEW DELHI: Tilak Kak, the topper of the 1971 Indian Police Service batch, took over as the new Director-General of Sashastra Seema Bal on Tuesday.

A law graduate, Mr. Kak has served as Superintendent of Police in sensitive Pratapgarh, Mathura, Ghaziabad and Lucknow districts of Uttar Pradesh.

He also served in the Central Bureau of Investigation from December 1980 to March 1985. During this tenure, he investigated the infamous Bhagalpur blinding case. Since 2003 he has been serving as Director-General of Fire Service in U.P.

`Women being empowered'

NEW DELHI: "Through education and progressively more representation in the elected bodies, Indian women are being empowered for greater participation in significant nation-building activities," said Delhi Lieutenant-Governor B.L. Joshi at the Annual Day celebrations of the Delhi Commonwealth Women's Association here on Tuesday.

Mr. Joshi said the outcome of the women empowerment efforts would necessarily depend on how well women were prepared to reap the benefits of empowerment and how motivated were the agencies involved in this empowerment process.

Education Minister visits injured child

NEW DELHI: Delhi Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely on Tuesday visited Master Mohit Bajaj, who was injured in a mini-bus accident on Monday, in the Intensive Care Unit of St. Stephen's Hospital and wished him a speedy recovery.

Mr. Lovely said all public schools working in contravention of the orders of the Directorate of Education and using private vehicles to ferry schoolchildren would be heavily penalised. He asked the Directorate of Education and the Transport Department to take strict action against violators.

Advertising Club meeting held

NEW DELHI: Delhi Advertising Club organised a meeting of art directors, copy writers, managing directors and chief executive officers of advertising agencies in the Capital this past week to discuss the proposed "DAC National Awards for Excellence in Advertising". The meeting was chaired by DAC president V.K. Chopra.

Several issues like inclusion of participants from the SAARC for the awards were discussed at the meeting.

Free cataract camp

NEW DELHI: Bhaktivedanta Hospital will conduct a free cataract surgery camp at Barsana village in Uttar Pradesh from February 9 to 19. The team conducting the operations will comprise 12 well-known ophthalmologists from Mumbai, over 30 graduate doctors, five nurses and 150 volunteers. The camp, with all modern surgical equipment , would cater to the poor.
