Lifer for dowry harassment

Staff Reporter

Nellore: Third Additional District and Sessions Judge of Nellore C.S.S.V. Durgaprasad on Monday sentenced O. Venkatasubba Reddy to life imprisonment and levied fine of Rs. 1,000 under various sections, which are to run concurrently.

The accused belonging to Kovur of Nellore district was married to Vijayalakshmi of Muttukur village in Atlur mandal of Cuddapah district in October 2001. At the time of marriage the bride's family had promised to give ornaments, Rs. 1 lakh and land as dowry but could not keep the promise. Following this, Reddy, his parents and relatives started harassing Vijayalakshmi.

On December 2001, Reddy informed his in-laws that Vijayalakshmi was missing. They rushed to Kovur and lodged a police complaint. On December 7 Vijayalakshmi's body was found in a well near her house, with a boulder tied to her legs.

During the hearing five others were acquitted.
