Lucknow Open from today

Lucknow: Professional golf will make a comeback to the City of Nawabs after nearly half a decade with the four-day Lucknow Open that tees off at the par-70 Lucknow Golf Course on Wednesday.

The tournament that will be the 11th leg of the 13-leg Amby Valley PGAI Tour's 2005-06 season will offer a cash prize of Rs. 1,58,200 to the winner, while the runner-up gets richer by Rs. 1,08,700, Captain of Lucknow Golf Club Adarsh Seth said on Tuesday.

This will be the first professional golf tournament in the city after the HT-Hero Honda tourney, which was held in 2001, he added.

Strong field

The event to be staged on a stroke-play format will feature a 72-strong field including country's top ranked golfers Mukesh Kumar and Ashok Kumar.

The Indian golfers will be given a run for money by foreign counterparts including Sri Lankan pro B.G. Lalith Kumara and Pakistan's Matloob Ahmed Rana.

Also in the fray will be Asian Tour pro Digvijay Singh, Indian Open winners Feroz Ali and Ali Sher, PGA championship of India winners Uttam Singh Mundy, Vivek Bhandari and Vijay Kumar and promising golfers like C. Muniyappa and S. Madhaiah.

Leading the local challenge will be Vijay Kumar, Sheeraz Kalra, Sanjay Kumar and Jumman. — UNI
