Rs. 3 lakh for animal welfare trust

CHENNAI: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday said the Government would earmark Rs. 3 lakh for purchase of an ambulance to bring abandoned animals from different places to the Animal Welfare and Protection Trust (AWPT), a non-Governmental organisation, in Chennai.

In a statement here, she said the AWPT at Santoshapuram in Velacherry had given asylum to 94 dogs and 46 cats.

The Government would also provide Rs. 3 lakh at the rate of Rs. 25,000 per month to the AWPT for purchase of medicine and vaccines for the animals, she said. — Special Correspondent

Durai Murugan to head manifesto committee

CHENNAI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam principal secretary Durai Murugan will head the party's committee to prepare the manifesto for the Assembly elections.

Parithi Ilamvazhuti, Sargunapandian, Ko.Si. Mani, K. Ponmudi, A. Rehman Khan, S. Kuppusamy and T.K.S. Elangovan will be members of the committee. M. Nathan will be its secretary, says a press release from the party headquarters. — Special Correspondent

TNPSC oral interview

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) has said that oral test for selection of assistant surgeons (general/specialised) in the Tamil Nadu Medical Service 2003-04 would be conducted on February 9 as planned. The TNPSC Secretary, Ramesh Kumar Khanna, said the interviews, in respect of candidates who had already been summoned to attend on February 9, would be held as scheduled. — Special Correspondent

Urdu Lovers Forum plea to Chief Minister

CHENNAI: Convener of the Urdu Lovers Forum S.M. Pasha on Monday sought Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's intervention to improve the functioning of the Urdu Academy.

In a memorandum to the Chief Minister, he said since its inception, the academy had not published any book or held any meeting of its governing body. An office of the academy was yet to be set up. — Special Correspondent

AIADMK assistance to needy students

CHENNAI: The general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday handed over receipts of a total of Rs.3.06 lakh to seven needy students for fees remitted in their names at their respective educational institutions to enable them to continue their education.

A release issued by the party headquarters here said the funds were released from the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr.M.G.R. Trust. The students belonged to engineering colleges, teachers training colleges and other institutes of higher education. — Special Correspondent

Guruvayur temple annual festival

CHENNAI: The annual festival of the Sri Krishna Temple at Guruvayur (Kerala) will begin on March 2 and conclude on March 19.

To ensure sanctity in all Tantric rites and poojas, children below five years will not be admitted to the "Nalambalam" of the temple. However, offerings such as child-feeding and "Thulabharam" would be allowed. — Special Correspondent

Three children drowned

TIRUNELVELI: Three students were drowned on Tuesday. Polices said Jayakumar, Jayaprakash and Pitchumani of Ayyaneri under the Thiruvenkadam police station limits were taking bath in an irrigation tank near their village and drowned suddenly. Though the victims were rushed to the Kovilpatti government hospital, they died on the way.

Two killed in accident

TIRUNELVELI: Sankar (40) and Rajappa (35) of Nagercoil were killed and eight others injured when a van in which they were traveling overturned near Amirthakudi under the Panagudi police station limits on Tuesday.

Police said the van was proceeding from Thirukkurunkudi to Nagercoil. The injured were rushed to Asaripallam Medical College Hospital.

Students consume poison

Nagercoil: Plus-Two students of Neyoor Government Higher Secondary School tried to commit suicide by consuming poison on Tuesday. When Vipin Prabhu (18) and his friend Milton John (18) of Neyoor failed to produce records, they were not allowed to attend practical examination. So they took the extreme step. They were shifted to the Government Hospital.

Plea for advance

Nagercoil: The Tamil Nadu Warehousing Corporation Employees Union has pleaded for Rs.2,000 as advance to its employees in flood-hit areas.

A resolution to this effect was passed at its State executive committee meeting here on Monday. They demanded cell phones for all managers and deputy managers of godowns to facilitate them contact the persons concerned during crisis.

Quiz competition

Tuticorin: Students association of Fisheries College and Research Institute organised a State-level inter-collegiate quiz competition here on Monday.

Students from 14 colleges in Chennai, Namakkal, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Kanyakumari and Tuticorin districts took part in it. S. Kuttralam and V. Aslum Suja of National Engineering College, Kovilpatti, emerged winners in the event. S. Mani Ram Krishna and S. Barani Velan of Government Medical College, Tuticorin, finished second.

M. Thirunavukarasu, vice-president (human resources), Sterlite Copper Industries Limited, gave away the prizes to the winners.

Job on compassionate ground sought

Nagercoil: The Tamil Nadu Government Officials' Union has urged the Government to give job to heirs of 76 road workers, who died in the intermediate period, on compassionate ground.

Its district president C.Velayuthan said the Government should extend all benefits by treating the period when they were not in service as working days. As many as 2,000 members of the union from different parts of the district would participate in a rally and conference, which would be organised on behalf of 12 lakh government servants in the State as a thanksgiving gesture to Chief Minister for three days from Feb 8. — Staff Reporter

DYFI to stage dharna on February 13

KARUR: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will stage a dharna at 200 places all over the State on February 13 to highlight their five-point charter of demands including employment generation and filling of vacancies in government departments, the DYFI State Secretary, S. Kannan, has said.

Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Mr. Kannan called upon the State Government to generate employment opportunities, and fill vacancies numbering over three lakhs.

Villager donates palmleaf manuscript

NAGAPATTINAM : Dhanakodi, a villager of Kariapattinam in Vedaranyam taluk in Nagapattinam district on Monday handed over a three-century-old palmleaf manuscript to Ranvir Prasad, Additional Collector (Relief and Rehabilitation), Nagapattinam, for preservation.

Mr. Dhanakodi donated the manuscript as part of the joint efforts by the Department of Culture of Government of India and the Departments of Tamil Culture and Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments of the Tamil Nadu Government to take statistics on palmleaf, paper and leather manuscripts and inscriptions on metals more than 75 years old in the country.

Manhunt for three

ERODE: The Kundadam police on Tuesday registered a case against three persons for disposing of two bodies without informing the police. According to the police, Eswari (25) and her one-and-a-half - year-old son Suriya were found dead in a garden well. It was alleged that Chellamuthu, husband of Eswari, his father Dhandapani and their relative Nachimuthu cremated the bodies without informing the police. Following a complaint filed by the Marudhur Village Administrative Officer, the police have launched a manhunt for the three.

Power shutdown

ERODE: There will be no power supply on February 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the following places due to the maintenance work at the Gandhinagar sub-station: Kanjikoil, Pallapalayam, Goundempalayam, Karattupalayam, Peruma palayam, Chinniampalayam, Ayyanvalasu, Gandhinagar, Naduvalasu, Thudupathy, Ponnandavalasu and Suriampalayam.

Councillors' plea

ERODE: Municipal Councillors K. Arjunan (Independent), Vijaykumar and Rajkumar (AIADMK) and C. Mani (DMK) along with sanitary workers presented a memorandum to the Municipal Commissioner, K. R. Selvaraj, on Tuesday demanding regularisation of the municipal contract labourers. The memorandum said that over 60 sanitary workers were working on contract basis and they should be made permanent.

Inspector suspended

Salem: The Salem SP, R. Arumugam, suspended Periyanayagam, an inspector of Vazhapadi police station in connection with the hooch tragedy that occurred a few days back. Four persons lost their lives after consuming the illicit brew in a village near Vazhapadi.
