Rajasthan Govt. signs MoU with LIC

Special Correspondent

Insurance cover for people living below poverty line and marginally above

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) for providing insurance cover to the people living below poverty line as well as marginally above the poverty line in both the urban and rural areas in the State.

Additional Chief Secretary A.K. Pandey signed the MoU on behalf of the State Government in the presence of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje here on Monday. The other signatory was the LIC Chairman, A.K. Shukla.

The State Government agreed to constitute an expert committee, under the terms of the MoU, to extend social security and insurance cover to weaker sections and render all possible assistance to them. A representative of LIC will be one of the members of the committee.

Mr. Pandey said the committee would examine all issues relating to insurance cover, formulate schemes and suggest the modalities for their implementation in the interest of the targeted population.

Ms. Raje, speaking on the occasion, pointed out that a comprehensive social security scheme for the BPL families and other marginalised groups was the need of the hour for protecting them against the risks associated with poverty and natural disasters.

Ms. Raje said the people at large would benefit from the welfare schemes if an awareness about them was generated. The LIC's Country Head, Pension and Group Insurance, Nilesh B. Sathe, informed about the insurance schemes being implemented for Anganwadi workers, sheep breeders, weavers and artisans in the State.

The LIC chief, Mr. Shukla, said the corporation would like to invest in the long-term insurance policies in the State.

The Principal Secretary, Medical and Health, Sudhir Bhargava, made a presentation on the proposed health insurance cover for farmers and BPL families.
