15 fall unconscious after ammonia leak

CHENNAI: About a dozen women employees of an export garment unit in Padi fell unconscious on Tuesday after inhaling leaking ammonia from a nearby cold storage unit.

Police have arrested the cold storage owner, C.R. Rajan.

Police said around 10.30 a.m. an ammonia compressor in the storage unit at Balaji Nagar burst leading to the leakage of the chemical.

The fumes spread and entered the garment factory, as a result of which the women employees in the garment factory fell unconscious. They were taken to a private hospital and discharged later.They were discharged after treatment. According to fire and rescue service authorities, this was not the first time a chemical leakage had taken place in the unit

Police received similar complaints about the company on two earlier occasions. A case under Section 337 (causing hurt by an act, which endangers human life) has been registered against Rajan.

He has been remanded to judicial custody, police added.
