NEW DELHI : Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Pramod Mahajan will take care of the coming Assembly elections in Assam, and Arun Jaitley, also a general secretary, has been asked to take charge of the elections in West Bengal. Party president Rajnath Singh made the announcement late on Tuesday evening. Assembly elections are scheduled in five States this year. Rajiv Pratap Rudy has been asked to take charge of Tamil Nadu and L. Ganesan will be in-charge of the elections in Kerala. Thirunavukkarsar will take care of the elections in Pondicherry. The overall charge for the three southern States goes to Venkaiah Naidu. While Mr. Mahajan keeps the job he had during the presidentship of L.K. Advani, Mr. Jaitley, who was earlier in-charge of Tamil Nadu, has been moved to West Bengal, where Mr. Rajnath Singh was in-charge. In the five States going to the polls, the party's biggest political stake is in Assam. The party hoped to have tie-ups with other political groups to try and dislodge the ruling Congress, senior leaders said. The party is keen that it will be able to "open its account" in Keralaby winning a seat or two.
