MANGALORE: Gamaka Sammelan Samiti, Suratkal, in association with Dakshina Kannada District Gamaka Kala Parishat, is organising the Dakshina Kannada District Gamaka Sammelan at Vidyadayinee Diamond Jubilee Hall, Suratkal, near here on Thursday. K. Anantharama Rao, writer, will preside over the sammelan to be organised at the Vidwan Sri P.S. Vasudeva Rao Vedike. Harikrishna Punarur, former president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, told presspersons here on Monday that there is a need to encourage gamaka, the art of singing poems. The sammelan is an attempt to introduce this tradition to the audience, he added. Noting that the sammelan will give opportunity to up and coming "gamakis," he said Mr. Anantharama Rao will be taken in a procession from Iddya Sri Mahalingeshwara Temple to the sammelan venue. I. Ramananda Bhat, managing trustee of the temple, will inaugurate the sammelan. M.S. Krishna Bhat, samiti president, will deliver the felicitation address. "Gamaka Sinchana" and "Gamaka Rasadhare" have been organised as part of the sammelan. Chandrakala Nandavar, principal, Ganapathy PU College, will preside over the Gamaka Sinchana session. Hosahalli Keshava Murthy, gamaki, will recite portions from "Bhisma Bhakti." Ananthakrishna, Chairman, Karnataka Bank, will preside over the valedictory function. The samiti will felicitate nine persons and an organisation for their contribution in popularising gamaka.
