THUMBE (BANTWAL TALUK): Mayor K. Ashraf has indicated that he will review water supply in the city sector by sector in the next few days to ensure that the onset of the summer will not bring with it water crisis for the people of Mangalore.

Speaking to presspersons after offering "bagina" to the Nethravati here on Tuesday to mark "Gangavatharana," Mr. Ashraf said he is aware that a few elevated areas in Mangalore are not getting water regularly.

But what has surprised him is the fact that a few low-lying areas are also not being supplied water, he said. On checking, he had found out that a few pockets in the city, which were getting water regularly during the last summer, are not being supplied water now despite the pipelines being intact.

Allaying fears of a water crisis this summer, Mr. Ashraf said what needs to be strengthened is water distribution as availability of water is not a problem. The present frequency of supplying water once in two days will be continued, he added.

When pointed out that the water meant for the city is being diverted to areas around Mangalore, Mr. Ashaf said he had foreseen such a situation and had asked the officers to regulate water distribution.

    Another dam

The Mangalore City Corporation is considering the construction of a second vented dam at Thumbe at a cost of Rs. 40 crores. The survey work in this regard has been completed, Mr. Ashraf said and added that he is hopeful that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will provide assistance in constructing the dam. Mr. Ashraf said he will lead a delegation to the Chief Minister soon.
