A restaurant, guest house at Greater Kailash allegedly found tampering with meters

NEW DELHI: The power distribution company BSES in its raids on "big fish" claims to have detected power theft by a prominent restaurant and a guesthouse at Greater Kailash in South Delhi. Along with detecting theft of around 200 kw from the two premises, the BSES also found the guesthouse allegedly using a sophisticated remote-controlled device to suppress recording of energy.

Stating that the restaurant situated in Greater Kailash I market used to regularly figure in the media for its Page 3 events, the BSES said at this ultra posh multi-cuisine joint power theft to the tune of 80 per cent was detected.

The power company said in the raids the enforcement teams found that the restaurant, which was spread over three floors and a basement, had been stealing electricity by tampering its three meters by a whopping 80 per cent. According to a BSES official, "the restaurant had broken the seals of its meters; cut the ultra sonic welding and broke open the meter body. The accused had also managed to short circuit the circuitry, to slow down the meter."

While a penalty of over Rs 50 lakhs has been imposed on the restaurant, the guesthouse has also been penalised Rs 30 lakhs for theft. At the guesthouse, located at Greater Kailash I, BSES said its enforcement team found theft to the tune of 90 kw by tampering of the meter. The meter was running 67 per cent slow and the BSES said: "The guesthouse was found to have illegally deployed a sophisticated remote controlled device to suppress the recording of energy." As such a penalty of over Rs 30 lakhs has been levied on it.

Stating that "this is for the first time, that BSES has detected such a sophisticated device being used to steal electricity," an official said in all the restaurant and the guesthouse were found to be having a connected load of 88 kw and 121 kw respectively, much beyond their sanctioned limit.

The director of BSES, Lalit Jalan, said: "Now BSES has decided to go after the `big fish' indulging in power theft as part of its `zero tolerance' policy. The raids on the `big fish' will continue and we hope these cases will serve as a deterrent to others."
