dated February 9, 1956: Portuguese charge denied

An official spokesman in New Delhi on February 7 described as palpably false the Portuguese allegation that individuals from the Indian Union were responsible in any way for violent internal disturbances inside Goa. Referring to a recent Portuguese communiqué which blamed Indian nationals for attacks on police stations inside Goa, the spokesman pointed out that such statements were undoubtedly in line with persistent Portuguese propaganda which presented developments within its possessions in India as the result of extraneous factors. "What really happened in recent months, as is well known, is that the nationalist movement, developing on peaceful lines, continues to be suppressed by the Portuguese authorities with every conceivable form of repression. Excesses by the police have been widespread and brutal."
