Mobile legal aid for poor

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Legal Services Authority (TNSLSA) will soon have a mobile legal aid facility, a helpline for free legal aid and its own website, according to its Member-Secretary A. Rathinavelu.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, Mr. Rathinavelu said efforts would be made to spread awareness on the need to register births, deaths and marriages in Chennai. The scheme will be subsequently extended to districts and taluks.

To cater to the needs of the poor and the downtrodden, the mobile legal aid clinic would visit hospitals, police stations, magistrate courts and slum areas to offer free legal assistance. Campaigns are also to be launched against domestic violence, dowry harassment, sexual harassment and kattapanchayat, the Member-Secretary said. If need be, the assistance of recognised Self-Help Groups (SHGs) too would be requisitioned.

Mr. Rathinavelu said legal awareness groups would be made part of SHGs, and they would get training on basic legal issues to serve as a liaison body between the TNSLSA and the affected people.

Student-volunteers associated with the NSS would be motivated to form Students Legal Awareness Cells in their institutions and conduct awareness camps in rural areas, he said.
