12 buildings fight for `fire safety award'
K.T. Sangameswaran
CHENNAI:
The Directorate of Fire and Rescue Services has received a dozen entries for "fire safety awards" announced by it from owners of the best maintained high rise buildings and enclosed premises of public buildings.
Of the 12 applications received by the directorate, seven were from Chennai and the rest from places including Tuticorin, Hosur, Ranipet and Vriddhachalam.
Though the response may be considered poor, the fact that owners of buildings have come forward to take part in the competition is in itself a welcome sign and should be encouraged, say official sources.
The award is perhaps the first of its kind in the country.
What could have put off other owners from participating in a contest that sought details of the respective buildings?
The reason is obvious, say officials, with a smile.
