Golf
MUMBAI: India's number one golfer, Simarjeet Singh, teaming up with Chirag Kumar for India A, thwarted a spirited Singapore challenge to win the International Strokeplay team title at the Royal Challenge 105th all India amateur golf on Wednesday. Simarjeet managed a level-par 70, while Chirag produced 71 as India A totalled 281 in the two-day competition at the Bombay Presidency Golf Club par-70 course. Singapore (Choo Tze Huang 66/Jonathan Leong 72) took the second spot at 282, ahead of first day leaders Gagan Verma (72)/Joseph Chakola (72) representing India B.
Day's best
Huang's 66 was the day's best individual score, a bogey on the ninth hole being the only setback in a brilliant show by the Singapore golfer. England, Sri Lanka A, Pakistan and Sri Lanka B finished in that order for positions fourth to eighth. Final placings (international strokeplay): India A (Simarjeet Singh 73 + 70, Chirag Kumar 67 + 71) 281; Singapore (Choo Tze Huang 72 + 66, Jonathan Leong 72 + 72) 282; India B (Gagan Verma 66 + 72, Joseph Chakola 74 + 72) 284; England (Thomas Haylok 72 + 74, Tom Sherreared 73 + 70) 289; Bangladesh (Mohd. Siddikur Rehman 75 + 70, Mohammad Shahid 74 + 75) 294; Sri Lanka A (K Prabhagaran 76 + 67, Mithun Pereira 75 + 77) 295; Pakistan (Tariq Mehmood 76 + 81, Muhammad Safdar Khan 75 + 79) 311; Sri Lanka B (J.M.D. Indika 73 + 76, Vijitha Bandara 87 + 76) 312.
