Lucknow Open: Vikramjit in the van

Lucknow: Chandigarh-based pro Vikramjit Singh took the lead on the first day of the Lucknow Open on Wednesday when he fired six birdies to finish with a career best round of six under 64.

The other highlight of the day was Pappan, playing in the first group, firing a hole in one on the Par 3 fourth hole here at the Par 70 Lucknow Golf Club.

Earlier fog delayed the start of the game and upset the day's schedule, which forms the eleventh leg of the Amby Valley PGAI Tour 2005-2006.

Feroz in second place

Trailing the leader by two strokes was Feroz Ali who carded a four under 66 and C. Muniyappa was one stroke further behind with a first day tally of 3 under 67.

The leader board however did not tell the complete story, as there were still 26 players from a field of 72 who were unable to finish their rounds due to the delayed start.

Among those who will be completing their rounds on Thursday are Mukesh Kumar, S.S.P. Chowrasia and Digvijay Singh.

Birdie spree

Vikramjit Singh had birdies on the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 13th and 14th holes and narrowly missed going seven under for the day when he missed a four foot putt for eagle on the 3rd hole.

Vikramjit said, ``I hit the ball really well today. I hit the green seventeen times and putted pretty well.''

On his plan for the next round, the leader said, ``I'm just going to take it as it comes. The key is to keep hitting the greens.''

Sandeep Syal, Amardip Singh Malik, C. Kumar, Akbar Ali and Amit Khaitan finished with scores of one under 69 for the day.

Inder ahead

Among the amateurs, Inder Kumar Dhaon is leading with a score of five over 75.

The scores after 18 holes (Par 70): Vikramjit Singh (64), Feroze Ali (66), C. Muniyappa (67), Sandeep Syal, Amardip Singh Malik, Akbar Ali, C. Kumar and Amit Khaitan (69), Sanjay Kumar, A.S. Lehal and Binod Pandey (70). — UNI
