ALL FOR WATER: Telugu Desam leaders - T. Devender Goud, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy and Mandava Venkateswara Rao - taking out the Godavari Jala Sadhana padayatra in Nizamabad district on Wednesday.
CHUKKAPUR (NIZAMABAD Dt.): The Telugu Desam Party's Godavari Jala Sadhana padayatra led by party's Polit Bureau member T. Devender Goud commenced without any pomp or fanfare at this village in Machareddy mandal in the district on Wednesday. On the inaugural day of the three-day padayatra in the district, leaders and workers walked some 16 km from up to Kamareddy, covering Lakshmi Ravulapally, Devunipally, Palvancha Marri, Palvancha, Bhavanipet, Arepally and Uggurai villages. The padayatra proceeded along the State highway between Kamareddy and Karimnagar. At some places, villagers accorded warm reception to the participants by standing on either side of the road and schoolchildren were seen flashing the victory sign. Mr. Devender Goud was accompanied by former Ministers - Kadiam Srihari, Mandava Venkateswara Rao, Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, N. Anjaneyulu and E. Peddi Reddy - former Union Minister S. Venugopalachary, former MLAs - A. Annapurnamma, T. Arunatara, D. Satish Pawar, G. Govardhan, K. Ramakanth - and a host of functionaries. MLAs - K. Hareeswar Reddy (Parigi) and E. Dayakar Rao (Wardhannapet) - also took part.
Water policy
Addressing a press conference earlier at the night halt camp here, Mr. Srihari demanded that a comprehensive water policy be published before taking up the Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar lift scheme and enhancement of the Polavaram project capacity. Terming the attitude of the Government towards Opposition's suggestions "callous," he cited as example the tenders called for survey on the Dummugudem-Sagar project. Mr. Srihari accused the Chief Minister of doing injustice to the Telangana region by making efforts to divert 360 tmcft of assured water in the Godavari to the Krishna basin through the Dummugudem-Nagarjunasagar lift scheme and the Polavarm project.
Medical check-up
Special Correspondent in Hyderabad writes: The State Government has decided to depute a team of doctors from Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences to examine the health condition of TDP leaders who are on padayatra. In a statement, Health Minister K. Rosaiah said the team was being sent in response to several reports in the media about the leaders and their health problems.
