Karunanidhi writes to Manmohan
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to ensure that an appropriate Bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha in the ensuing budget session to provide reservation for Dalit Christians and Muslims.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, he said the quantum of reservation could be left to the State Governments to decide. He also wanted a "suitable legislation" to do away with the creamy layer concept from the reservation policy for the other backward classes. Social and educational backwardness alone were determining factors for identifying the beneficiaries, he said.
The DMK president also called for reservation for the OBCs in Central universities and institutions such as the IITs and the IIMs.
