2 Army officers relieved of responsibilities

But the Major and Captain have not been suspended

  • ULFA linkman picked up, body found in gunny bag
  • Kakopathar residents block highway
  • Army chief calls for impartial probe

Guwahati: Investigating the custodial death of a suspected United Liberation Front of Asom linkman in Tinsukhia district, the Army relieved two officers of their responsibilities in the State, even as a similar death was reported from Karbi Anglong.

The Army last Sunday picked up Ajit Mahanta from Kakopathar. It later said he died of injuries sustained in an escape bid.

Mahanta's body was found in a gunny bag in the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Tezpur on Monday.

Defence sources said here on Wednesday that Brig. A.S. Minhas of 2 Mountain Division was inquiring into Mahanta's death.

A Major and a Captain were relieved of their responsibilities, but not suspended.

On Tuesday residents of Kakopathar blocked National Highway 52. The administration intervened to have the body cremated, as Mahanta's family refused to accept it "until the guilty were punished," official sources said.

Army Chief Gen. J.J. Singh has directed the Army authorities in Assam to ensure a speedy and impartial probe.

    "Killed in encounter"

A cattle grazer, Dhaneswar Puma, who was picked up by the Army from Lembra village in Karbi Anglong district on February 2, was later killed in an encounter, the All-Tiwa Students Union alleged.
