dated February 10, 1956: Task before Congress

The Congress President, Mr. U.N. Dhebar, on February 9 outlined three tasks ahead of the 61st session of the Congress, namely, to take a step towards realisation of the Socialistic Pattern of Society, to strengthen the unity of the country and to make the Congress stronger. Unfurling the Congress tricolour to mark the commencement of the session at Shaheednagar (Amritsar), he reminded the audience of the independence pledge the Congress took over 25 years ago when it last met at Lahore under the presidentship of Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru and said that so far as the goal of political independence was concerned they had achieved it. Now they had to usher in economic and social justice and prosperity. "The pledge we took at that time was to make the whole of India free and strong and not a particular part or State of it. The country can stand as a whole and not as a disintegrated nation.''
