V.V.K. Mani passes away

Capt. V.V.K. Mani

Bangalore : Captain V.V.K. Mani, former Regional Manager of The Hindu at Bangalore, and now a Consultant, passed away here in the early hours of Thursday after a brief illness.

He was 66 and is survived by his wife Laxmi, a son and a daughter.

His father V.P.V. Rajan was the last Editor of The Mail.

Capt. Mani graduated from the Presidency College, Chennai, and joined the Army and became an artillery officer. Later, he was in the field of advertising and joined The Hindu in 1978. He served the paper for a quarter century.

An active Rotarian, he was well-known in the social circles of Bangalore. He was associated with the social service projects of the Rotary Club of Bangalore. He was Governor of Rotary District 3190 during 1997-98. Earlier, he was president of the Rotary Club of Bangalore.

He worked with the Rotary-TTK Blood Bank, the first in the region to compile and publish a directory of blood donors. He was conferred the Rotary International's award `Service Above Self.'

Capt. Mani was also active with the Bangalore Club and was its president in 1990-91.

He was president of the Bangalore Management Association during 1990-91 and a member of its executive committee till the end. He presided over a BMA event on Wednesday evening before he was taken to hospital. The BMA membership increased five times due to his efforts. He also served as president of the Advertising Club, Bangalore.

He displayed courage, determination and a positive attitude during a prolonged period of illness and hospitalisation in 1998 when he also underwent a renal transplant. He later became active in championing the cause of donor organ transplants.
