Pondicherry: The `sit in strike' by the Group `D' employees in the Government General Hospital and the Maternity Hospital in Pondicherry has affected the health services. The strike is called by the Federation of Group `D' workers of the Health Department. Official sources conceded that in- patients had got to be provided with only bread and milk. The sources said only very serious cases and major surgeries alone were taken up and minor operations were rescheduled. A federation spokesman told presspersons at the government general hospital where striking workers were sitting on the floor near the portico, raising slogans in support of their demands. They wanted the Government to revise the wage structure for sanitary workers, assistant cooks, laundry and ward attendants, auto clover operators, nursing orderlies, sergeants and other sections of workers. The workers also wanted conversion of the part time employees into daily wage paid workers. The spokesman said the anomalies in pay scales had been repeatedly brought to the notice of the authorities but to no avail.
