334 cases of matka registered in Belgaum in one year

Belgaum: The police registered 334 cases, arrested 685 persons for their alleged involvement in running "matka" gambling and seized cash estimated at Rs. 4.20 lakhs in different parts of the district from January 2005 to January 2006. These figures were given at a meeting presided over by district magistrate and deputy commissioner here on Tuesday. Last year, three persons were arrested under Goonda Act, two of whom were released on "technical grounds".

Liquor trade

The Excise Department officials conducted 220 raids and arrested 25 persons for carrying out illicit liquor trade and registered 22 cases in January this year.

Atrocities

In one year, the Department of Women and Child Development registered 112 cases of atrocities against women. That apart, 12 cases of atrocities on members belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes communities were registered and Rs. 1.55 lakhs as compensation was distributed among the victims.
